The main skirt is a very simple floor length A-line skirt made up of what Mary calls two aprons – effectively a separate front and back of the skirt, attached at the waistband. Buttons and button holes secure the sides

“In each side of the skirt form a division forming, as it were, an apron in the front and back. At the waistband I attach a strap, hanging down loosely any suitable distance, over each of the divisions.”

This is our pattern inspired by Mary Ward’s patented cycling skirt consists of eight pattern pieces; front, back, front side facing, back side facing, hem front and back, side strap and waistband.

We used a similar light weight wool for the mock up to see how the material would tether and fall over the hips when gathered by the side straps.
